Brighten Your Smile:
Answers to Your Most Common Whitening Questions by Dr. Hwang!
Many patients come to us seeking brighter, whiter smiles. If you're wondering about teeth whitening, you've come to the right place! Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening at our dental practice.
Q: Why are my teeth stained?A: There are several reasons your teeth may appear darker or stained. Common causes include:
- Food and drinks: Beverages like coffee, tea, and wine, as well as certain foods, can cause staining over time.
- Bad oral hygiene: Insufficient brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits can lead to the buildup of plaque and calculus, which can contribute to discoloration.
- Smoking: Cigarettes contain nicotine and tar that seep into tooth enamel, leading to discoloration. Similarly, smoking cannabis can stain teeth due to the plant tannins.
- Worn enamel: As the outer layer of enamel wears away, the yellowish layer beneath it, called dentin, may become more visible.
- Medications: Certain medications, like tetracycline, can cause discoloration if taken during childhood or in certain dosages when teeth are forming.
- Nerve damage: Trauma to the tooth can result in a darker appearance as a result of nerve damage.
A: While some patients may experience mild sensitivity to cold liquids or air following a whitening procedure, this usually subsides within 24 hours. You may also notice gum irritation, but this typically resolves within a few days. If you experience any discomfort, let us know, and we can offer advice to help alleviate it.
Q: Is whitening bad for my teeth? Can it damage my teeth?A: No, whitening your teeth is safe when done correctly. We use a controlled concentration of hydrogen peroxide that is effective and doesn’t damage teeth. Hydrogen peroxide penetrates the tooth structure to target stains more deeply than surface-level products. It works by chemically breaking down stains, and when used in the proper concentration, it does not damage the teeth.
Q: Can I get my teeth whitened?A: Yes! At our dental office, we offer two effective whitening options to help you achieve a brighter smile.
- In-office whitening:
- Our in-office Zoom! Whitening system uses a combination of hydrogen peroxide gel and a specially designed ultraviolet (UV) lamp to produce maximum whitening results in the shortest amount of time. This procedure typically takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes and provides dramatic results.
- Take-home whitening:
- If you prefer to whiten your teeth at home, we offer a custom solution. We will create a personalized whitening tray based on a scan of your teeth. You’ll use the tray with Opalescence whitening gel for 30 minutes a day, typically for 2 weeks. In some cases, you may need a longer treatment period to reach your desired shade. Take-home whitening is a great option for ongoing maintenance, and you can use it every 3-6 months as needed.
A: We don’t recommend whitening toothpastes because they are usually abrasive. Long-term use can wear down the outer layer of enamel, causing the yellowish dentin layer to appear and potentially damaging your teeth. Over-the-counter whitening products typically contain lower concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Professional whitening treatments will lead to more noticeable and longer-lasting results.
